Our commitment to sustainability
Converga, as a division of Datam Ltd, is committed to a successful and sustainable future for our people, our business and our environment. We have a growing number of programmes and initiatives across the Group that reflect our commitment.
A formal recycling and waste minimisation programme was launched at our Petone site in July 2007 with the aim of further developing and promoting recycling and the diversion of waste from our landfills. The first waste audit as part of this programme was conducted on 29 June 2007 in conjunction with Govt3. This provided a baseline measure of what made up our waste. A second waste audit was conducted on 19 March 2008 resulting in a fantastic 62% reduction in waste to landfill. As of September 2008 our GoGreen waste reduction and recycling programme has been rooled out across the Group and we are reporting on our waste to landfill and recycling figures on a monthly basis, as of November 2008 over 90% of our waste produced has been diverted from landfill.
Other initiatives that are already in place across the Group include:
- energy-saving lighting systems are in place in office sites nationwide
- our custom built site in Auckland is four Green Star rated
- our sites have been involved in the ‘Clean Up New Zealand’ campaign as well as Earth Hour and World Environement Day
- we have planted native trees on the public reserve behind our Auckland premises
- we are a member of the Sustainable Business Network
- we promote products such as biodegradable plastic wrap
- our Information Technology roadmap includes the rollout of energy-efficient desktop monitors
- our new envelope-inserting machines have been designed to reduce energy consumption
- our office cleaning chemicals are biodegradable.
Being sustainable means thinking about tomorrow. As an organisation we believe that we’re heading in the right direction and we’re confident that our ongoing commitment to sustainability will ensure we continue to make significant inroads and progress.
